چکیده

Supervisory Soil Scientist, USDA Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Forest and Range Experiment Station located at the Station's Research Work Unit at Tempe, in cooperation with Arizona State University. Headquarters is in Fort Collins, in cooperation with Colorado State University. Abstract: Mediterranean ecosystems can be harvested, undergo type conversion, or be burned. Both wildfires and prescribed burning are important features of these ecosystems. All these activities affect soils and mineral cycling. Managers are concerned with assessing the impacts of different management activities. Soil, physical, chemical, and biological properties are important parts of these assessments. The implications of nutrient loss and availability on shortand longterm site productivity are lacking. Guides are needed by land managers for making assessments of their decisions.

Effect of crop rotation on the changes of potassium forms and clay minerals under Mediterranean climatic condition

ABSTRACT-The influence of intensive crop rotation on the distribution of potassium forms and clay mineralogy was assessed under a Mediterranean condition in the Piranshar region, northwest of Iran. For this purpose, surface soil samples in relation to six soil sub-groups from crop rotationfiled (sugar beet, wheat, pea, and barley) over five decades and the adjacent uncultivated lands were descr...

Manures behave similar to superphosphate in phosphorus accumulation in long-term field soils

Repeated application of manures to agricultural soils could cause the accumulation of phosphorus (P) in soils. However, it is unclear if manure P can behave similar to P in soluble fertilizers in accumulation Olsen-P (0.5 mol L-1 NaHCO3 at pH 8.5) in soils. A long-term wheat-maize rotation experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of repeated application of manures on P accumulation i...

Assessing the Effects of Infrastructure, Land Use and Built-Environment on the Bicycle Mode Choice in Urban Trips Using A Multi-Criteria Decision-Making Approach

This study identified the most important variables affecting the choice of bicycles in urban travel in terms of infrastructure, land use, and environmental conditions and could be a roadmap for future studies with a special look at the variables related to land use. Cycling has long been a way of traveling, especially in urban settings. But choosing this mode of travel requires improvements to ...

Applied and Basic Research in Mediterranean- Climate Ecosystems1

Professor of Biology, Stanford University, Stanford, California 94305 USA Abstract: Man's impact on ecosystems has become so pervasive that there is now little distinction between basic and applied ecological research. Still, the available research results are often inadequate to translate into management policy. The use of an international network of ecosystem study sites in which researchers ...

Soil erosion by assessing hydrothermal conditions of its formation

Soil erosion is one of the vital factors contributing to the loss of fertility and environmental degradation. Generally accepted diagnostics of eroded soils is based on comparison of the sloping soils profile depth with the watershed soils. In this case, there is a separate problem of slope soils with a naturally shortened profile and eroded soils. Formation of the soil’s natura...
